What They Say – SHAMAREE MUIR
When did you start your career as a jockey?
I started my career as a jockey in the year 2010 but have been involved in the sport from 2007. From back then I would walk horses in the mornings for trainer Morris Powell. Living so close to the track and knowing Mr Powell, I would always go to the track in the mornings and spend some time with him around the horses where I grew a love for them.
Which horse was your first winner?
My first winner came aboard Brother To Brother, trained by Neville Cooper, over six furlongs.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
My longest odds winner was Azario for trainer Gary Griffiths at 99-1 over 1800 metres.
Which is the best horse that you have ridden?
The best horse that I have ridden is Missmyrtleboyrichie.
Which is the best horse you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
I have seen I’m satisfied, A King Is Born and Bruceontheloose, all horses trained by Phillip Feanny. I have also seen the Spencer Chung-trained Saint Cecelia and Miracle Man trained by Billy Williams, but for me, I would say Miracle Man is the best horse I have seen race at Caymanas Park. He is an outstanding racehorse; a great ‘stayer’ and a strong finisher going long.
Who has influenced your career most?
Trainer Morris Powell was the one who encouraged me to come to the track early in the mornings and he would give me horses to walk around the ring in front of the stable, and then let me take them onto the track for exercise. He said that he would help me with my dream of becoming a jockey, which he did. He sent me to school, provided me with all the necessary gears that I needed. There were times when I was going to give up, but he would motivate me to go on, and to put my best foot forward at all times. I look up to him as a role model, because he is always behind me. He is the reason I am where I am today, champion apprentice.
