Canada whip Girlz, Mexico shock US for World Cup spots
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Jamaica’s dreams of a first-ever female FIFA World Cup berth ended in tears last night as Canada swamped the home team 5-0 in the semi-final of the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
On a cool night after intermittent showers, the young Reggae Girlz who had promised much leading up to the game with a number of historic achievements, failed to show up, and allowed the North Americans to have their way, dominating the game in all departments.
Canada and giant-killers Mexico, who beat the USA 4-2 on penalty kicks in the first game, will meet in the final tomorrow after Jamaica and the USA meet in the consolation third-place play-off match.
Another massive crowd came out in anticipation of the Jamaican team booking their tickets to Costa Rica next March but left disappointed, many before the 60- minute mark.
Hopes were heightened after Mexico created a massive upset in the first game, inflicting a shock 4-2 penalty kicks win over defending champions the United States after they had played out a 1-1 scoreline.
Canada and Mexico will now meet in Saturday’s decider and will represent CONCACAF in Costa Rica next year.
