Wilson’s love affair with netball continues with Titchfield
WINSTON Wilson is one of the long-serving netball coaches in Jamaica, and has played his part in teaching and developing the sport at the school and club levels.
With 40 years of coaching under his belt, the 68-year-old has positively impacted the careers of many young netballers, many of whom went on to represent the country.
Shantel Reid, Terry-Ann Jones and Conique Moore are among some of Wilson’s charges, who have made it to this year’s national Under-21 team. Mona Dorman, Angella Brown, Jennifer McDonald, and Simone Edwards, all shooters in the 1980s for the Sunshine Girls, are students of Wilson.
Edwards, who went on a netball scholarship in the United States, eventually turned to basketball where she played for her college before strutting her stuff in the Women’s National Basketball Association professional league. She then moved to Israel and Turkey as a professional.
Wilson is currently the head coach of Titchfield High School in Portland, having had prior stints at Kingston Technical High School (KTHS), Ardenne High, Ardenne Extension, and Wolmer’s Girls’.
At the club level, he guided Hampshire Sports Club, Kingston Gardens and Swallowfield.
Wilson has won titles in the ISSA urban area schoolgirl league with Wolmer’s, and just last year steered Titchfield to the quarter-finals of the rural version.
