‘Spring’ make strong start in LIME Cup
Team captain Carl Bruce underlined the importance of a strong start ahead of Sunday’s LIME Cup team match play golf opener at the Constant Spring Country Club and the defending champion Springs came out swinging, racking up back-to-back wins in the competition’s lead-off rounds.
The region’s top golf competition returned at the immaculate course, and despite intermittent rain, the island’s biggest names in the sport delivered an impressive display with the playing of rounds one and two.
Playing on their home course and powered by the likes of Bruce, Paul Thompson, Kei Harris and Mark Newnham, the Springs ran out commanding 8.5 to 1.5 winners over debutantes the Red Stripe Legends with Ian Garbutt, Wayne Sutherland, Carlysle Hudson and Michelle Gabay also pulling in wins in their respective match-ups.
In the match of the round, two-time champions the Appleton Buccaneers got the better of last year’s finalists the Advantage Generals by a 7-3 margin, with skipper Tommy Lee leading from the front with a strong 5-3 win over Gilford Wilmot.
The SportsMax MaxPak were too strong for the LIME Lions, swinging their way to a 7.5-2.5 win in the other round one square-off.
Round two, the afternoon session, saw another win for the defending champions Springs, who walked away with a close 3-2 win over the LIME Lions this time, with the pairs of Gabay/Harris, Thompson/Radcliffe Knibbs and Hudson/Dennis Jones getting the all-important wins to keep the Springs unbeaten and ominous after two rounds.
Good news for the Advantage Generals, who bounced back with a 4-1 win over the Red Stripe Legends, who are finding life tough in their maiden LIME Cup campaign, while 2009 and 2010 champions, the Appleton Buccaneers and the SportsMax MaxPak, shared a 2.5 card in their match-up.
Rounds three and four will head west to the second city with Montego Bay’s Cinnamon Hill, the home of the Advantage Generals, playing host to top-class golf on November 17.
The Caymanas Golf Club will host round five of the competition as well as the final and consolation round on November 24.
