George’s poised for final four
DEFENDING champions St George’s College will look to cement their place in the semi-finals of the 2013 ISSA/LIME Manning Cup football competition when they face Spanish Town at Prison Oval today.
In the 1:00 pm first game of the Group K double-header, joint second-placed teams Camperdown and Calabar engage each other, seeking maximum points, while hoping for a Spanish Town upset over the highly fancied St George’s College two hours later.
St George’s College lead the group with maximum six points, three ahead of Camperdown and Calabar, with Spanish Town firmly rooted at the base of the four-team group without a point.
The Neville ‘Bertis’ Bell-coached St George’s College opened their second-round campaign with an embarrassing 8-1 thumping of Calabar, before putting one foot into the semi-finals with last Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Camperdown.
Once they avoid defeat against Spanish Town, arguably the weakest team in the group, having conceded five goals in their 0-3 and 0-2 defeats against Camperdown and Calabar, respectively, then they would be essentially a mere 180 minutes from completing a three-peat of the Manning Cup title.
Calabar occupy second place on goal difference over Calabar, and from all indications, even a victory today might not be enough to see them advance to the final four, while Calabar’s humiliating defeat to St George’s College might have already condemned them to failure this season, despite their 2-0 victory over Spanish Town.
