Calabar making their mark in U-16, U-14 schoolboy football
MARLON Moo-Pow netted his second goal in the ISSA/WATA Under-16 Schoolboy football last Thursday to keep the hopes of Calabar High School alive after three rounds of matches.
Mow-Pow’s second-half strike ensured the Red Hills Roads-based school secured their second win from three matches.
Calabar’s opening match against St Andrew College was not played as the Bob Green-conditioned boys failed to get their identification cards on time from the governing body, the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA).
But Green revealed that St Andrew College had lodged an appeal against replaying the match.
In only his first season with the black and green clad boys, Green is pleased with the team’s performance, noting that despite not having his full complement, his team had been “gutsy”.
“I am looking to reach at least the semi-finals,” said a confident Green.
Calabar lost 0-1 to St Jago and beat Penwood High 3-2 before edging Jose Marti High 1-0 last Thursday.
However, their Under-14 team, being coached by Gladston Harrison, could go all the way after picking up all three points on Thursday when Jose Marti High arrived 45 minutes late.
The school’s bus driver accepted blame for the Under-14 team’s late arrival.
“I went for them late,” he said.
Like the Under-16 team, Harrison’s boys could not play their opening match against Gaynstead on Wednesday, October 23, because of not receiving their ID cards from the ISSA.
The Brendon Freckleton-skippered Calabar High defeated Penwood 2-0, St Jago High 2-1 before earning the 3-0 win over Jose Marti High, who arrived too late for their match.
Calabar High are in Group D of the Under-16 and Under-14 urban area schoolboy football competitions.
The second round of the competitions are scheduled for Friday, November 15, with four groups of four teams each.
