Westlanders top Roger Clarke netball tourne
Westlanders Netball Club topped the Senior Division in the Westmoreland Netball Association (WNA) Roger Clarke Netball Rally 2013 at New Market Oval in the parish capital Savanna-la-mar on Saturday.
Mix Strykers ‘B’ stopped the challenge of their five counterparts in the Junior Division that was played in the round-robin format. Manning’s claimed the runner-up spot, while STATHS finished third.
Ville Twisters, Savannah ‘A’ and New Market ended fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
“The Honourable Roger Clarke is a lover of netball and so it is natural for him to again sponsor this competition, this time in the sum of $300,000,” said Dwayne Vaz, the Westmoreland Central constituency consultant who represented the member of parliament.
This is the third season that Clarke is sponsoring the event.
Led by captain and goal-attack Nikhesia Pearce, Westlanders stormed the four-team Zone One ahead of Savannah, then grabbed semi-final one, 5-3, over Mix Strykers ‘A’ before taking the Final 6-4 against Savannah, who had beaten Zone Two winners BCLS 7-5 in semi-final two.
BCLS took third spot with a convincing 8-3 beating of Mix Strykers ‘A’, the defending rally champions. Sandals Whitehouse, Unlimited and Harvesters rounded out the senior division.
Westlanders will now defend their league title when that stage of the competition ends on Saturday at venues across the parish.
This year, both Seniors (seven teams) and Juniors (six teams) will contest a preliminary round robin with the top-four contesting the knock out stages(semi-finals, third place and final).
Meanwhile, elections of officers to the executive committee of the WNA will be held on Thursday, November 21, at Manning’s School at 5:00pm.
The 17 registered clubs have until 5:00 pm Thursday, November 14, to nominate persons to fill the nine available positions of president; three vice-presidents, secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer, assistant treasurer and public relations officer.
