Inter-zone deciders
TWENTY of the 32 teams in the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/LIME daCosta cup schoolboy’s football competition will pack their bags after tomorrow’s round of games as the second round comes to an end.
Only eight teams will advance to the quarter-finals and of the lot, five will advance with only a draw, which leaves another three teams scrambling.
Nine schools will be playing for pride as they have no hopes of advancing and will be completing their schedules of games.
On Saturday, five schools won a second straight game to take charge of their respective zones including Marcus Garvey Technical and Holmwood Technical, who will meet for the zone honours tomorrow.
Marcus Garvey edged Happy Grove 1-0 at Carder Park, but Holmwood’s 2-1 win over Brimmervale gives them the edge on goal difference as both schools are tied on six points each.
Oshane Powell and Jamario Mitchell scored for Holmwood, who were given a lifeline, advancing to the Inter-zone round as one of two best third place teams.
Keano Williams scored twice for St Elizabeth Technical and Khesario Hall got the other, his 31st goal in all competition this season as the Ben Francis Knockout champions continued to roll on, beating Lennon High 3-0 in Santa Cruz to take sole leadership of Zone Three on six points.
Port Antonio High were 2-0 winners over Cedric Titus for their second win in Zone Six, while Paul Bogle High beat Vere Technical 3-1 to lead Zone Seven after Frome Technical lost 2-1 to defending champions Glenmuir High at the Juici Beef field.
Manchester High, meanwhile, stormed back from consecutive setbacks to set themselves up for a place in the quarter-finals.
With Spalding High beating the fancied Clarendon College 2-1, Zone Four has been thrown wide open.
Adrian Smart’s goal gave Manchester High a lifeline after they were held 1-1 by Clarendon College on Wednesday and put them on top of the points tables with four points, one better than Munro and Spalding with Clarendon at the bottom with just a point.
A week ago Manchester High were beaten by St Elizabeth Technical in the finals of the Ben Francis KO and four days later had to settle for a point against Clarendon College.
Spalding High, meanwhile, put themselves in contention with a 2-1 win over Clarendon in the first game at Kirkvine with goals from Romario Plunkett and Jarvis Mattis after they were beaten by Munro on Wednesday.
