Davidson confident U-17 Girlz can go all the way
CATHERINE HALL, St James — The Jamaican Under-17 women’s team is 90 minutes away from a historic berth in a FIFA women’s World Cup and striker Felicia Davidson can almost taste it already.
After scoring a historic first goal against CONCACAF giants Mexico in Sunday’s final Group A game at the Montego Bay Sports Complex to earn a 1-1 draw and top the group with seven points, Davidson says she feels the team is on its way to Costa Rica where the fourth FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup will be held in March next year.
The US-based player, who scored directly from a corner in time added on at the end of the first half after a nervous-start Jamaica went behind from as early as the ninth minute, said: “I feel very good and feel like I am carrying my team to the World Cup.”
Asked whether she felt the team could qualify she was in no doubt. “Yes, I do; our team is very strong and we are athletic and technically skilled,” said the player, who became the third Jamaica player to score in the tournament after Asia Lee-Fatt, who leads the team with three goals and Jessica Johnson who has two.
The Mexican domination in the first 30 minutes had frustrated the Jamaican fans inside a near capacity Montego Bay Sports Complex, but in time added in the first half, Jamaica earned a corner and Davidson obliged by curling the ball into the far corner. And the local support erupted into cheers.
“When I saw the ball go in, I was just full of joy,” she told the Jamaica Observer. “I did not know what to do, I was just full, full of joy,” Davidson said.
Davidson, who combined well with Lee-Fatt in the second half to force the Mexicans back after the visitors had dominated the first half, admitted they were nervous at the start of the game but came into their own as the game progressed.
“From my point of view, Mexico is very strong and I was both nervous and anxious (at the start),” she said. “But throughout the game we felt better and more confident as the game progressed and we had more movement on the ball.”
