CATHERINE HALL, St James — Jamaica got the point they needed to top Group A of the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship after coming from behind to earn their first-ever point against Mexico in their final group game at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Betzy Cuevas scored to give Mexico the lead in the ninth minute, but Felecia Davidson equalised in time added for Jamaica at the end of the first half, with a delightful curling corner kick that flew into the far corner.

Both teams qualified for the semi-finals to be played on Thursday and will face North Americans giants the USA and Canada, who will meet today to decide who will top Group B.

A crowd of over 5,000 — more than double the attendance on Friday — forced organisers to open the Bleachers section, and 15 minutes into the game, the people were still streaming in.

This was the first time in three meetings at this level that Jamaica were scoring against the Central American powerhouse and also the first time they were earning a point.

In the opening game, substitute Alejandra Alvayero broke Haitian hearts with an 89th-minute goal as El Salvador scored their first goal of the tournament to win 1-0 in a game where pride was the only thing at stake.

Nine minutes into the game, the large crowd was silenced as Cuevas’s shot, from outside the area down the right flank, flew over the head of goalkeeper Shanay Ricketts and into the top corner of the goal.

Jamaica eventually clawed their way back when Davidson’s wicked curling corner sailed over the head of the Mexican defence and goalkeeper Emily Alvarado and into the far corner of the goal.
