Dinthill, ‘Garvey’ meet in rescheduled match
LINSTEAD, St Catherine — Former champions Dinthill Technical and Garvey Maceo High will meet at Dinthill this afternoon in a rescheduled ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup Inter-zone game, set to start at 3:00 pm, where the winner could take the lead in Group Eight.
The game, which is the first between the schools at this level since 2009, was originally set for Saturday but was postponed due to what the Jamaica Observer has learnt to be “a clash of colours”, despite the fact that Dinthill’s colours are maroon and gold and Garvey Maceo’s are red and white.
None of the four teams in the Group has managed a win yet as Dinthill and Garvey Maceo drew their opening Inter-zone games against Kemps Hill and St Thomas Technical, respectively.
On Saturday, St Thomas Technical and Kemps Hill also drew their game leaving both on two points each.
A win for either Dinthill or Garvey Maceo this afternoon would put them in front on four points and in control of the group with one set of matches to be played on Wednesday.
Another draw, however, would make things interesting.
Meanwhile, there could be changes to the venues and times for Wednesday’s games to ensure that no team gets an unfair advantage.
George Forbes, ISSA’s competitions co-ordinator said yesterday that, given the close races in a number of the groups for the sole qualifying place, the organisation would be taking a good look at the games and make decisions so none would benefit from playing after their close rivals had played and be in a position to take advantage.
Sixteen games will be played on Wednesday to decide the eight qualifiers to the quarter-finals that start on Saturday and four of five teams that have won their first two Inter-zone games will need only a point to advance.
St Elizabeth Technical High, who are chasing the rural area double after winning the Ben Francis Knockout, Holmwood Technical, Port Antonio High and Paul Bogle High can advance with a draw on Wednesday.
Marcus Garvey Technical have also won their two games, but trail Holmwood Technical on goals scored and must win their game if they are to make progress.
The teams are tied on six points and a goal difference of plus-two, but Holmwood, one of two best third-placed teams to qualify for the Inter-zone round, have scored more goals — a total of four to Marcus Garvey’s two.
