Schafer seems set to stay on
ROSE HALL, St James — Winfried Schafer should be officially offered a new contract to stay on as the coach of the Reggae Boyz by the end of November, according to Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) boss Captain Horace Burrell.
At a press conference held yesterday at the Hilton Rose Hall Resort and Spa to announce a two-game friendly series against Caribbean rivals Trinidad and Tobago later this month, Captain Burrell said negotiations were in an advanced stage and should be finalised soon.
“We are in serious discussions with several sponsors,” Captain Burrell said. “It is now only a matter of time before we put pen to paper and sign a new contract,” he added, noting that the signs were all “encouraging”.
Stressing that Shafer, who replaced Theodore Whitmore towards the end of the failed World Cup 2014 campaign, “wants to stay here”, Captain Burrell said both the JFF and the Government, as well as the private sector, were all working towards ensuring the much-travelled German stayed here for the next World Cup campaign that won’t begin for a next two years at least.
“We need the support to take care of the financial obligations,” Captain Burrell said, but promised that “before the end of the month we hope to make everything formal”.
