Manchester rebound to stun Munro
KIRKVINE, Manchester — Manchester High stormed back from consecutive setbacks to set themselves up for a place in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football competition after edging Munro College 1-0 in their Inter-zone round game played at Kirkvine in Manchester, yesterday.
With Spalding High beating the fancied Clarendon College 2-1, Group Four has been thrown wide open, setting up Wednesday’s final set of games to be a fight to the finish to see which team will soar to the top at the end.
Adrian Smart’s goal gave Manchester High a lifeline, after they were held 1-1 by Clarendon College on Wednesday, and that put them on top of the points table with four points, one better than Munro and Spalding, with Clarendon at the bottom with just a point.
A week ago Manchester High were beaten by St Elizabeth Technical in the final of the Ben Francis KO, and four days later had to settle for a point against Clarendon College.
Spalding High, meanwhile, put themselves in contention with a 2-1 win over Clarendon in the first game at Kirkvine with goals from Romario Plunkett and Jarvis Mattis after they were beaten by Munro on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, five other schools won consecutive games to take charge of their respective zones, including Marcus Garvey Technical and Holmwood Technical, who will meet for the zone honours in Wednesday’s final set of games.
Marcus Garvey edged Happy Grove 1-0 at Carder Park, but Holmwood’s 2-1 win over Brimmervale gives them the edge on goal difference, as both schools are tied on six points each.
Oshane Powell and Jamario Mitchell scored for Holmwood, who were given a lifeline, advancing to the Inter-zone round as one of two best third-placed teams.
Keano Williams scored twice for St Elizabeth Technical and Khesario Hall got the other, his 31st goal in all competitions this season, as the Ben Francis Knockout champions continued to roll on, beating Lennon High 3-0 in Santa Cruz to take sole leadership of Zone Three on six points.
Port Antonio High were 2-0 winners over Cedric Titus for their second win in Zone Six, while Paul Bogle High beat Vere Technical 3-1 to lead Zone Seven after Frome Technical lost 2-1 to defending champions Glenmuir High at the Juici Beef field.
Grange Hill shook off their 0-3 loss to Green Island in midweek to thump Green Pond 4-1 at Jarrett Park to move back into the picture in Zone One. Ackeem Shackleford scored twice, while Emroy Vanhorne and Orvest Hewing got one each as Green Pond have now lost three straight games after getting to the semi-finals of the Ben Francis KO, the first time they got out of the first round.
St James High and Muschett High are the leaders in Zone Two with four points each after wins over Rusea’s High and Godfrey Stewart, respectively.
Romario Clarke scored in the 23rd minute and Michael Williams in the 63rd, as St James came back from a Deshane Beckford eighth-minute lead for Rusea’s at Jarrett Park.
At Drax Hall, Muschett got goals from Zidane Francis and Garel Gooden to beat Godfrey Stewart High, who are on three points from their win on Wednesday over Rusea’s.
