USA, Canada set to confirm semi-final spots
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Defending champions the United States and Canada are set to confirm their places in the semi-finals from Group B of the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship when the competition continues this afternoon with another double-header at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, starting at 3:30 pm.
The North American powerhouses are tied statistically at the top after similar 8-0 victories in their opening games on Thursday over Trinidad and Tobago and Guatemala, respectively.
Today, Canada will face Trinidad in the opening game at 3:30 pm followed by the USA against Guatemala 6:00 pm in what could be two more one-sided encounters.
The wins will also set up what could be the best game of the tournament, USA vs Canada on Monday afternoon to decide which team will advance as the Group winners to face the two qualifiers from Group A that includes Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz.
In Thursday’s twin-massacre, the US became the first team to score more than 100 goals in the tournament’s history, this one being the fourth time the tournament was being staged.
Thursday’s eight goals pushed the USA’s total to 101 in 16 games, miles ahead of Canada, the only other nation in CONCACAF to score more than 40 goals, according to the CONCACAF website.
