STETHS-Lennon showdown highlights D’Cup
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — The clash between Ben Francis KO champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and Lennon High, winners on Wednesday, will highlight today’s second set of matches in the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup schoolboys’ football competition in the second game of a double-header at the STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz set to start at 3:00 pm.
With just the winner of the zone advancing to next weekend’s quarter-finals, a win for either team today will be crucial to their ambitions of surviving.
Seven other schools will also be hunting a second win today to boost their chances as well — Godfrey Stewart, Munro College, Marcus Garvey Technical, Port Antonio High, Paul Bogle, Holmwood Technical and Frome Technical. The latter could end Glenmuir High’s reign as champions when they meet at Juici Patties field.
Meanwhile, Green Island and William Knibb Memorial played out a 2-2 draw in Lucea yesterday in a Group One top-of-the-table clash that left both teams tied on four points each.
Ackeem Williams and Peter Tucker scored for Green Island, while Shanwayne Williams and Hugh George Watson scored for William Knibb.
Meanwhile, contrary to published reports Green Island are not in the Inter-zone for the first time as they were semi-finalists in the 1996 season.
On Wednesday, STETHS turned back Christiana High 4-1 with the irrepressible Khesanio Hall scoring yet another hat-trick, while Lennon edged first-time qualifiers BB Coke by a Neon Johnson goal to leave both schools locked at the top of Zone Three on three points each.
STETHS beat Lennon 2-0 in their Inter-zone clash last year also at STETHS and will be hoping for a similar result this afternoon.
Glenmuir High, who shocked STETHS in the daCosta Cup final last year winning 1-0 in extra time, must win today if they are to have any hopes of advancing. Having lost to Paul Bogle High on Wednesday, their hopes are now hanging by a thread.
Paul Bogle High, who led STETHS late in their Ben Francis KO semi-finals, are the favourites in the zone and will face Vere at Jamalco. Wins for both Paul Bogle and Frome would set up a tasty clash on Wednesday.
