Green Island, William Knibb meet today
LUCEA, Hanover — Green Island High and William Knibb Memorial, surprise winners on Wednesday’s set of games in the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup schoolboys’ football competition, will meet today at the Colin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea in a game that could help decide the quarter-final qualifiers from Zone One.
The teams are tied on three points each after Green Island shocked Grange Hill 3-0 at Frome on Wednesday in their first ever game at this level, while William Knibb surprised high-flying Green Pond 3-1 at Jarrett Park.
William Knibb avenged their first-round Ben Francis Knockout loss to Green Pond and won their first Inter-zone game after nine straight dating back to the 2007 season when they drew one game while losing the other eight.
Only the winner of each of the eight zones will advance to the quarter-finals.
Green Pond have been one of the surprise teams this season, winning Zone A in the first round after beating both St James High and Cornwall College then rode their form to the semi-final of the Ben Francis KO where they lost to Manchester High.
Hugh George Watson’s return to the William Knibb line-up has added quality and depth and he showed his worth on Wednesday with two well taken goals, the first coming from a shot from the right side which lodged into the far corner and the second a well-taken header from a pin-point cross from Rojen Thomas.
Leyton Galloway has been the leader for the Green Island team this season and will be expected to carry the weight of their offence again today.
Meanwhile, after the first round of games, some unfancied teams such as Godfrey Stewart High and Port Antonio High were also winners.
The second set of games will continue tomorrow with another 15 games, including Ben Francis KO champions St Elizabeth Technical taking on Lennon High, both winners on Wednesday.
