Canada crush Guatemala 8-0 in CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Champs
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Canada made a strong opening statement with a big 8-0 trouncing of Guatemala in their Group B game of the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship at the Montego Bay Sports Complex yesterday.
Three players — Marie Mychele Metivier, Marie Levasseur and second-half substitute Nadya Gill — all scored doubles, while Emily Borgmann and Jessie Flemming both added one each to the tally.
It was mostly one-way traffic for the full 90 minutes as the undersized Guatemalans were made to work hard against a well-organised and hard-running Canadian outfit.
All but one of the goals came from inside the Guatemalan 18-yard box and the Canadians dominated all facets of the game and were up 3-0 in less than 40 minutes without their goalkeeper Rylee Foster touching the ball only three times.
Metivier started the goal fest in the ninth minute when she dribbled straight down the middle of the field and beat Guatemalan goalkeeper Angie Hildago from close range.
Borgmann added a second in the 25th minute, while Metivier completed her double in the 39th minute.
Fleming in the 55th and Levasseur with her first two minutes later made it 5-0 and the sixth came from Gill four minutes after she replaced Borgmann, from what appeared to be a cross that sailed into the far corner of the goal.
Gill added her second in the 85th minute and Levasseur also completed her double in the 87th minute.
In a late encounter, champions USA were down to face Trinidad and Tobago.
