T&T, Cuba in CFU semis
Trinidad and Tobago advanced undefeated from Group A to the semi-final round of the 2013 Caribbean Football Union Women’s Under-20 Championship defeating Cuba 3-1 at Drewsland on Tuesday in the feature match of the double-header programme.
Cuba also advanced as the runners-up from the group.
In the opening match Anguilla and Grenada played to a 1-1 draw. Anguillan captain Coleen Johnson put her team ahead in the 22nd minute, while Ariba Collins replied for Grenada in the 52nd minute. It was the first goal for Anguilla in the tournament, while Grenada were scoring their fourth.
These two teams are not yet at this level but they are very well coached. They are very much aware of what they are expected to do mentally and where they should be, but physically with the ball at their feet they are still some way off.
Trinidad and Tobago on a wet surface came out firing on all cylinders, but showed too much anxiety and in so doing missed several chances to put the game to bed.
Within the first 15 minutes they missed at least three goals. It was not until they dropped the tempo that they became more collective and took the lead five minutes to the break.
Talented left-winger Patrice Campbell, who seems to possess more brawn than brain, eventually calmed herself to make amends for earlier misses by coolly rolling the ball to the far corner past goalkeeper Monica Padilla to give Trinidad and Tobago a deserved lead.
Yoanna Calderon Gonzanez, Cuba’s leading goalscorer, found an opening on the right of the T&T goal and drove a powerful right-foot shot past goalkeeper Tenesha Palmer to tie up the score at 1-1 on the stroke of half-time, as the Cubans came more and more into the game at this stage.
Trinidad and Tobago returned for the second session with new vigour, while Cuba did not carry on from where they left off at the break, as they opened the window of opportunity for the twin-island girls to seize control and the attacking Khadidra Debesette put T&T ahead in minute 67 while twin sister Khadisha engineered the outcome.
Cuba fell further behind four minutes later after Jonelle Warrick sneaked a header past the Cuba goalkeeper Monica Padilla at the near post to put the game out of the reach of their opponents.
Following the results of yesterday’s game at the Anthony Spaulding Sport Complex between top teams of Group B — Jamaica and Dominican Republic, the winners of Group A will face runners-up of Group B, while winners of Group B will face runners-up of Group A in tomorrow’s semi-finals.
The final will be played on Sunday at the Anthony Spaulding Sport Complex.
