Negril Charity Golf Tourney raises $800,000
APPROXIMATELY $800,000 was raised at the 7th Annual Negril Charity Golf Tournament held at the Negril Hills Golf Club
on Sunday.
The money was raised from entry fees, sponsorship from main sponsor, Digicel Business, as well as Caribbean Producers, Columbus Business Solutions (FLOW), Interbrand Inc, Anderson Fabrics and Bella Oasis Spa, and will benefit the Clifton Boys Home and the Green Island Primary School.
The Boys Home is currently undergoing renovations to their dining room and hallway floors from proceeds of last year’s tournament, and the school received a new sign, exterior painting and donations of school supplies recently from Couples Negril.
The tournament attracted 42 players this year, an increase from last year’s number of 34, and was officiated by Sebert Walker. This year, both gross and net scores were used for the first and second place winners.
“This year, we allowed a wide cross-section of players from low handicaps that competed for gross prizes to high handicaps that competed for net prizes. Overall, we are very pleased with the results and we feel that the participants are as well,” noted Glenn Lawrence, CEO of Couples Resorts, and an avid golfer himself, and a huge sports enthusiast.
The first place winners using net scores were George Watt, a Jamaican, who played with a guest from Couples Negril, Scott Stewart from Canada, while the first place winners using gross scores were Sean Morris and John Brennan.
Both teams won three nights in a suite at a Couples Resort.
Second place winners (net scores) were Greg Chong and Khaleel Azan, while Steve Richards and Vin Dell were the gross scores winners, who won two nights in a suite at a Couples Resort.
The third place winners Dean McIntyre and Norris Scaffe, who won two nights at a Couples Resort, while the fourth place winners were Mark Cline and Dan Lamb, who were presented with Samsung smartphones, donated by Digicel, who also offered a Samsung S4 Mini for a raffle, with the proceeds going towards the money raised.
Dean McIntyre won a gift basket from CPJ for being the winner of the putting contest, while John Brennan and Norman Scaffe won the closest to the pin. Brennan did so on the seventh hole, and Scaffe did it on the 16th hole.
Both received 70-minute Signature Messages from Bella Oasis Spa.
