MBU Seek lead in RSPL
CATHERINE HALL, St James — MONTEGO Bay United could take over the lead in the points tables of the Red Stripe Premier League after Sunday’s fifth-round game against promoted Rivoli United at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, starting at 3:30pm.
Montego Bay United are currently in second place on seven points after four games, tied with Waterhouse FC, both trailing surprise leaders Humble Lion who are on nine points.
Waterhouse and Tivoli Gardens, who are on six points, will be in the feature game that could see the winner move closer to the top of
the tables.
After losing their opening game, Montego Bay United have won twice and drawn their last game, a 2-2 draw against Boys’ Town after they had taken a 2-0 lead, but then gave up a last-minute equaliser.
The Donovan Duckie-coached Montego Bay United will also be seeking to maintain their perfect home win record this season, after winning the only game played at home already, a 2-1 margin over Sporting Central Academy in the second week of the season.
It will be the first meeting between the clubs at this level, as Rivoli who were promoted back to the Premier League at the end of last season and were not in the Premier League when Montego Bay United gained promotion three seasons ago.
Both teams have rested the last two weeks and should be fairly fresh. Montego Bay United should have used the break to work on the mistakes that led to them conceding late goals in back-to-back games.
Montego Bay United were knocked out of the Flow Champions Cup Knock-out by Tivoli Gardens with a goal in the 67th minute, then gave up a 90th minute equaliser to Boys’ Town in their most recent Premier League game.
Rivoli’s record shows one of the best defences so far in the league, conceding just two goals, but have also just scored twice. MBU, on the other hand, has scored five times, and will be hoping Dino Williams and Lesly St Fleur, in the attack with the hard-tackling pair of Jermaine Woozencroft and Keniel Kirlew in the midfield, will help them to secure maximum points.
