TG, W’house through to Flow Champions Cup KO final
CHAMPIONS Tivoli Gardens and former champions Waterhouse advanced to the 2013 Flow Champions Cup Knockout final with contrasting wins in their semi-final matches played at Drewsland in a double-header fixture on Sunday night.
The final is set for Monday, October 28, and the winners will receive the first prize of $1,000,000 of the total cash prize package of $2.3 million.
The runners-up will pocket $400,000 with semi-final losers gathering in $200,000. In the individual awards category, $70,000 will go to the most valuable player; $50,000 to the top goalscorer, and $50,000 to the winning coach.
Tivoli Gardens, who were reaching their fifth final of the competition, first advanced in style, drubbing Arnett Gardens 5-0 in a one-sided affair in the opening game via goals from Keammar Daley in the 15th and 18th minutes, Kemar Flemming in the 39th, Jameel Thompson in the 50th, and substitute Dwayne Smith a minute from full-time.
Three-time and defending champions Tivoli Gardens last won the Champions Cup in 2010/2011 by beating St George’s SC of Portland 3-0. Their earlier victories were registered against Violet Kickers in 1998/1999 and Portmore United in 2006/2007.
Waterhouse, who edged Harbour View 1-0 to reach their fourth final of the competition, lacked the first-game aggression but were always in a game that see-sawed from end-to-end until the final whistle was blown.
Waterhouse also wanted to play a high-pressed game and left Romario Campbell on the bench for Gary McIntosh, who was coming off an injury. However, when the gambit backfired, coach Junior Francis pulled McIntosh and inserted Campbell.
Harbour View’s game was fast and steady with crisp passes, but their shooting let them down. They lived to regret those missed chances as with the introduction of Campbell the game slowed considerably and in so doing the initiative was wrested from them.
Anticipating that Harbour View would have come at them while kicking down the slope in the second half with more drive, Waterhouse changed tactics and switched to a four-five-one formation with Jermaine Anderson being the lone front man, while Campbell hovered dangerously in a top-link position.
Harbour View were being well served by Keith Kelly in midfield, but his team lacked penetration up front and Waterhouse were able to stem the flow and throw players forward as the introduction of Campbell brought new drive to their playing approach.
Anderson fired in a left-footed free kick which rebounded off the crossbar and caused some anxious moments for Harbour View. Playing on familiar territory Waterhouse were getting warm and a combination between Anderson and Campbell produced the goal in the 59th minute that broke the deadlock, with Campbell getting the final touch. It was a rasping rightfooter which cannoned under the rooftop of the net that left goalkeeper Devon Haughton helpless on his line.
It handed Waterhouse a lifeline with which to force their way into a fourth final in search of their third lien on the Cup, having won for the first time in 2003/04 by beating Village United 2-1 and again won in 2006/07, beating Tivoli Gardens 2-0.
