Under The Dryer: The beautiful earth edge
Owner and manager of Beautiful Earth Natural Hair Haven Dr Veronica Reid is always on the move. Between running a bustling salon, manufacturing a line of organic hair and skincare products, and raising her eighth-month-old daughter, she gets very little time off her feet, let alone time to enjoy the services her salon provides. Under the Dryer joined the super-mom as she treated herself to a touch-up of her punk rock tresses before joining a few of her clients for their own stylish transformations.
MAKING THE CUT
Be they buzz cuts, undercuts or mohawks, shorter styles are definitely trending. Celebrities like Jada Pinkett Smith and Amber Rose are among those who recently debuted fresh cuts, but Beautiful Earth owner and manager Dr Veronica Reid has been rocking a fab mohawk for months now.
Having recently shed her gorgeous dreadlocks in favour of an edgier look, Reid treated herself to a touch-up of her distinctive
new ‘do.
Armed with only an electric shaver, a small razor blade and a bottle of Asherlee Natural leave-in cream, Beautiful Earth hairstylist Alecia Wright got to work. She shaved the sides first before choosing a simple, lined design and etching it in. She finished the trim with a generous application of leave-in cream to the vertical strip of hair remaining in the middle, fluffing it a bit before pulling the bulk of it into a single cornrow braid.PETAL TO THE METALThe Faux HawkBeautiful Earth Natural Hair Haven
Anthropologist and consultant Muna Lobé is among those women who love the look and feel of a shorter style, but she wasn’t quite ready to part with her long locks. In order for her to have the best of both worlds — after giving her an interlocked updo — Beautiful Earth hairstylist Alecia Wright recommended she try looping her thick strands into luscious locked petals.
To get this look, she first separated her client’s thick head of hair into smaller sections — leaving a few strands free in the front — before creating diagonal parts from the nape of her neck and across to her crown. Taking two strands at a time, she twisted the hair along the parts into an asymmetrical updo. For the petals, Wright simply took the tresses left hanging and created loops using her fingers, securing them in place with tiny elastic bands and spritzing with a bottle of the salon’s 100 per cent virgin coconut oil for moisture and sheen.
Babysitter Audrey Duhaney often has to be ready to move at a moment’s notice, which leaves little time for styling her short, budding dreadlocks. For a ‘do that’s suited to ladies on the go, hairstylist Neisha Minott fashioned Duhaney’s two-toned twists into a fun faux hawk — another style for women who want to get the freshly shaven look without the commitment.
The look was achieved by first interlocking the strands and moisturising with coconut oil before isolating a vertical strip of hair in the centre. Once the middle section had been separated, the sides were then made to look like they had been shaved by twisting them into cornrow braids and having them meet in the middle.
Throughout the month of October, Beautiful Earth Natural Hair Haven is offering a pamper special that includes a hot stone manicure, pedicure and a massage.
