Walker, Subratie — the toasts of the Park
LAST Saturday was an unforgettable day for leading jockey and former champion Omar Walker and for trainer Gary Subratie who recently returned from triumph in the Trinidad and Tobago Derby with Bigman In Town.
The combination has produced many winners especially since the start of this season, with Walker being the stable rider for the Subratie barn. So when the two teamed-up for another victory with Alisonbee in the third race, it came as no surprise to those present at the track. This time, however, it was a very special win for both Walker and Subratie.
Walker, who has been champion rider four times, was recording his 700th career win, while Subratie, who is having his best ever season as a conditioner was saddling his 400th winner. These significant milestones were warmly greeted by both professionals.
“I just want to thank my family, God, all the trainers and grooms who have assisted me over the years to reach 700 winners. I am happy and I am looking forward to riding another 700 winners. It has not been easy, it is a lot of hard work and dedication, and that will continue,” said the man who has taken the shortest time ever to record 700 winners.
For Subratie the achievement of saddling 400 winners was the culmination of a game changing week in his career.
“Wow! What a week. I really want to thank all those who have helped to guide me to this signal moment in my career. Two major developments, winning my first Derby ever and 400 winners in Jamaica, is really something to savour. It has been a strenuous road thus far but it is one which I would never replace,” Subratie said.
