St Catherine thrash UTech to lift JAMT20 title
St Catherine Cricket Club thrashed University of Technology (UTech) by 68 runs to win the 2013 Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) JAMT20 competition yesterday at Kensington Park.
The university students, who won the toss and sent St Catherine CC to bat, were celebrating when they removed Orain Williams, 12, and Tamar Lambert, 22, at 35 for 2.
However, captain Danza Hyatt, 31, and Wayne Morgan, 65, wiped the smiles from the faces of the students and their supporters with an important 79-run third-wicket stand.
Morgan’s knock came off just 28 deliveries and included four fours.
UTech were put in more misery by Andre Russell, who, along with Morgan, took a liking to the opponents’ bowling. Russell, who scored a quick-fire 55, which included seven sixes and a four off 21 deliveries, put on 65 runs for the fifth wicket with Gavin Wallace, 16 not out, to take their team beyond 200.
Damion Williams, 2 for 36, and Davion Johnson, 1 for 32, were the wicket takers for UTech.
UTech, in reply, were never in the game and lost wickets regularly. Cassius Burton, 45, Andrew Richardson, 20, and John Ross Campbell, 18, were the chief run-scorers. David Morgan, 2 for 12, Lambert, 2 for 18, and Wallace, 2 for 26, took most wickets for St Catherine CC.
Final scores: St Catherine 214-6 off 20 overs; UTech 146-9 off 20 overs.
Hyatt praised the consistency of his team’s batting for the impressive victory. “Well done to the batsmen, we batted very well,” Hyatt said, adding that while in the field, “we bowled well and took some good catches, which ensured we came out on top.”
Campbell, UTech’s captain, said St Catherine CC were the better team on the day and they have nothing to be disappointed about. “Some errors in the field gave away the match,” he said, adding that they “didn’t show up” (for the final), and “dropped a lot of catches” in the field.
He, however, said, “We did well to make it to the final.”
Wayne Morgan was voted Man-of-the-Match, and Lambert, Man-of-the-Series.
