Rain ruins ‘Cup’
Weather permitting, action in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup football competition should resume today with a number of matches across the Corporate Area.
Persistent rain forced the postponement of all matches scheduled yesterday, but improved conditions today could see Group A leaders Hydel High — on 16 points — maintaining dominance in Group A when they travel to fourth-placed Edith Dalton James High (seven).
In other Group A matches, last-placed St Andrew Technical (one point) host second-placed Ascot High (11), and Calabar High (10) welcome Jonathan Grant High (five).
In Group B, leaders Norman Manley High (14 points) visit third-placed St Jago High (10), Excelsior High (13 points) will make the trip to Waterford High (five), and Cumberland High host Haile Selassie High.
In Group E, third-placed Jose Marti Technical (13 points), playing at home, will be hard-pressed to keep out runaway leaders Jamaica College (18), who are yet to drop a point after six outings.
In other Group E matches, Bridgeport High (13 points) travel to Ardenne High (three) and Tivoli Gardens High (zero) welcome St Andrew College (three) to the Edward Seaga Sports Complex.
In Group G, which is bereft of any traditional contenders, top school Holy Trinity High (16 points) entertain Trench Town High (12), Innswood High (10) welcome St Mary’s College (six) to Chedwin Park, and cellar teams Meadowbrook High (one) and Campion High (one) face off at the former’s school playing field.
All matches are scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.
At the end of the preliminary phase, the top two teams in each group automatically advance to the second round of the Manning Cup. The two best third-placed schools will also progress in the Corporate Area schoolboy football competition.
However, only the seven group winners and the best second-placed team will move on to contest the Walker Cup Knockout.
