CARLINE Graham-Powell, coach of Holmwood’s senior and junior netball teams, was left mourning the passing of the school’s junior team captain Shakeria Muschett, who was one of four students who perished in a traffic accident in the Chudleigh area of Manchester, while on their way to school yesterday morning.

The 15-year-old Muschett was to lead Holmwood in their opening Junior League netball match against Bellefield at the school yesterday, but the tragedy forced the postponement of that match, as well as that involving the seniors of both teams.

The distraught coach argued for Government buses to start plying the routes in the area, particularly for the safe transportation of students.

“We need a new bus system (JUTC) just as in Kingston, as the taxis won’t take the children because they said the fares are too small, while the mini-vans are speeding recklessly, and too many of our students are losing their lives in road accidents,” she said.

Graham-Powell said Muschett and the others who perished will be sadly missed by their schoolmates.

She noted that Muschett had played for the Jamaica Under-16 team against England Under-21 in a warm-up match a month ago, during the visitors’ tri-series with Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

“She was a member of the Jamaica Under-16 squad, while this would have been her third year playing in the ISSA Rural Area High School Junior League netball competition,” the coach added.

President of Netball Jamaica Marva Bernard could not be reached for a comment yesterday.
