IT was a glorious day for Jamaica at the Santa Rosa Park as Bigman In Town put away all the problems and failures in the Classic races here at home to win in smashing style, the very lucrative Trinidad and Tobago Derby yesterday.

It was really not a race in the end despite the five-pronged attack on the ‘Bigman’ from leading Trini trainer John O’Brien, as the three-year-old chestnut colt by Cowtown Cat — My Morning Prayer prompted the pace during most of the 2,000-metre event before his rider, top American-based jockey Javier Castellano asked him to step it up with 600 metres to go.

Bigman In Town responded well and skittered away easily from his 11 rivals to score by four-and-a-half lengths, winning in a final time of 2:07.2 minutes.

Second in the race was War of Words with third going to Princess Zeshan ridden by Jamaican Rajiv Maragh.

For trainer Gary Subraite it was a dream come true. “This is a very precious moment for me. It is my first Derby win anywhere and something which I will always remember and cherish,” said the man who is currently second in our local championship.
