Boy Wonder for ‘Dig-Out Handicap’ feature
Another batch of native-bred two-year-olds in conjunction with a cup race for older native-bred three-year-old horses and the racing staple and the curtain closer Track Price Plus ‘Dig-Out Handicap’ for $180,000 claimers three-year-olds upward and native-bred six-year-olds (NW3) will highlight a 10-race programme at Caymanas Park today.
In less than a month’s time, the native-bred two-year-old season will commence in full swing with the Supreme Ventures Limited Triple-race Series offering in the vicinity of some $11,000,000.
Two-year-olds will kick start the programme at 1:00 pm in a maiden special weight contest going 1,200 metres. Eight will run, with half of the field running for the first time. Chestnut colts Boy Wonder and Unbreakable are among the debutants who are expected to carry most of the betting. Another chestnut colt Big Bad Links, who will be running for the second time, and Gold Price a dark bay filly with three starts under her girth are the others.
Boy Wonder, a $3,000,000 Yearling Sale purchase bred by Richard Azan, Ian Parsard & Paradise Racing, owned by Curragh Jamaica Goat Agency and trained by Ian Parsard, has worked smartly coming into his debut race by ending his final workout with a snappy one-minute flat dash for 1,000 metres round on Thursday. The leading rider Omar Walker, 82 wins, gets the call.
Unbreakable, a well-built animal, has looked industrious in his preparation. Trained by the leading and champion trainer Wayne DaCosta for owner Carlton Watson, Unbreakable is nicely bred by Traditional out of Onemorefashion (Concerto) and bred by Ham Stables Ltd, is expected to be in the heat of battle when this is being decided. Former champion jockey, Dick Cardenas, has the leg up.
One hour later, the Knutsford Park Cup main feature, a Restricted Allowance II call for native-bred three-year-olds (NW2), will go to post at approximately 2:00 pm. The Knutsford Cup sprint feature has attracted a competitive field of seven going 1,200 metres.
This could turn out to be very competitive with Mama Blossom, Trail Blazer, Haweye and Persian Belle attracting most of the betting.
At a glance, the race looks as a straight fight, with Mama Blossom, trained by Gary Subratie for owner DG Stable, and to be ridden by Omar Walker; Haweye the mount of Paul Francis along with Persian Belle to be ridden by Dane Nelson and trained by Patrick Chang for owners WB Racing. However, Trail Blazer may just enjoy the trip of 1,200 metres a bit better than his rivals and could get there just ahead of the field with Cardenas in the saddle for trainer Wayne DaCosta and owners Elizabeth DaCosta, Laurence Heffes & Eric Martin.
