Athletes, GSAT top students awarded Sagicor scholarships
KRISTOFF Darby, record breaking junior athlete and the top performing boy at the 2013 JTA National Athletics Championships, and Mackaela Fraser, the top performing girl, have been awarded two of 16 scholarships from Sagicor Life Jamaica.
They were awarded last month along with 14 students who performed outstandingly in the recent Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT).
“I feel good because I know I worked hard for it,” Darby, who has been a track athlete for the last eight years told Career & Education.
The 15-year-old past student of John Mills Junior High is a Kingston College student, and was awarded a scholarship based on jumping 1.88m in May at the National Stadium, which broke the 2007 record of the boys’ high jump of 1.85m, along with his performance in the 400m and 800m events.
Fraser, student of Ken Wright Primary & Junior High School, was elated for the $125,000 scholarship she received towards her secondary education.
She has been an athlete for the past six years and performed in the 100m, 200m and 400m races. She hopes to attend St Jago High School when she sits the GSAT exams next year.
The 14 GSAT scholarship awardees were Joel Blake, Abigail Brown, Danique Fagan, Chrisanae Foster, Treshawna Douglas, Andriana Crawford, Alexander Boyd, Abigail Hunter, Priya Moncrieffe, Ramon Scarlett, Nakisha Williams, Phiona Richards, Rachel Miller and Keanu Griffiths.
They were each awarded $125,000.
