Hamilton-Barnes, Wright combo scores again at beach volleyball
SHEDEIKY Hamilton-Barnes and Kai Wright showed their intention of making winning a habit when they won the second round of the JustBet/TVJ SN Beach Volleyball Tour held at Cornwall Beach last Saturday.
Following up on their first-round victory, the Venus Volleyball Club pair of Hamilton-Barnes and Wright continue to prove themselves to be the number one female beach volleyball pair in the island.
In the finals against the former dominant UWI Volleyball Club pair of Cherine Richards and Cheryl Daley, Hamilton-Barnes and Wright came away the victors, though pushed to three sets, 21-18; 13-21; 15-6.
Hamilton-Barnes and Wright, who are preparing to represent Jamaica in the NORCECA Volleyball Confederation Beach Volleyball Tour to be held in Puerto Rico next weekend, said that they were happy to have won both rounds, but were not happy with the number of unforced errors they were making.
“We really will have to play with better court awareness and maintain our spacial orientation during the points,” said Hamilton-Barnes. “The NORCECA Tour is very tough and if we are going to stand a real chance we cannot be giving away points. There are some common errors in our game; we need to focus more so that we can, in essence, correct our errors before we make them.”
GC Foster Volleyball Club also made a bold statement in the beach volleyball circle when Khesia Livingston paired with Brittney Scott to take third over first round runner-up Renae Temple and Cherie Thompson.
A total of nine female teams participated in round two of the Tour in a total of 20 matches. One hundred thousand dollars in cash prizes has been won so far in this division, of which Hamilton-Barnes and Wright have won $30,000.
The third and final preliminary round leg will be held at the UDC beach in Ocho Rios this Saturday.
Another $50,000 will be up for grabs. Teams interested in registering for this leg may email the Jamaica Volleyball Association (JaVA) at volleyjamaica@yahoo.com. After the preliminary round the top six teams in terms of accumulated points will advance to the play-offs in another three-week competition in the Corporate Area. Another $150,000 in prize monies will be on offer for the teams.
