OVERPROOF PRODUCER KILLED
MUSIC producer Patrick ‘Roach’ Samuels, who scored hit songs by high-profile artistes, including Sean Paul and Vybz Kartel, was killed in St Andrew yesterday.
A report from the Constabulary Communication Network, says Samuels was shot multiple times on Manning’s Hill Road shortly after he left a party.
The incident took place at 4:30 am.
Samuels, 46, was from the Central Kingston community of Southside. He enjoyed significant success two years ago with the Overproof riddim which he co-produced with Justus Arison.
The beat yielded hit songs in Mavado’s Settle Down and Khago’s Tun Up Di Ting. Speaking with the Jamaica Observer, Arison described Samuels, whom he knew for nine years, as his mentor.
“For Roach, Overproof was just another notch in his belt. Through that he made me a credible producer,” he added.
Samuels and Arison also collaborated on the Rumfire riddim which spawned the hit song Caribbean Girls by Mavado.
Arison says Samuels started in the music business during the early 1990s. He produced dub plates for sound systems before branching out as a mainstream producer.
His first chart action came with the Siren beat, a take on Quincy Jones theme song from Ironside, the 1970s American television show.
Two songs on the Siren riddim, Sean Paul’s Break Out (from the multi-platinum The Trinity album) and Vybz Kartel’s Emergency, rhythm were hits.
