Magma eyes the breakthrough
IT has been 10 years since Bermudan singer Magma left his homeland for Jamaica, hoping to make it on the competitive reggae/dancehall scene.
His latest venture, a roots song titled Emmanuel, is precursor to his debut album scheduled to be released in December.
Both are produced by Paul Lowe-Chin for Chiney K Records, one of several producers Magma has worked with since coming
to Jamaica.
Josef Bogdanovich’s Downsound Records produced Blowing Against the Wind, the 2010 song Magma rates as his most popular Jamaican release.
When I Cry another Downsound production, and Love Jah and Live for Trendsetter Productions are other of his recent recordings.
“All of those songs are the groundwork for what’s going on now. Wi put a lot of work in dis project, and hopefully people wll like it,” said Magma.
Born Adam Mayo to a British father and Bermudan mother, Magma grew up in the town of Warwick (near the Bermudan capital, Hamilton) listening to reggae on underground radio stations.
He tuned in to artistes such as Burning Spear, The Congos, Sizzla, Capleton, and Bounty Killer. For more recording opportunities, he moved to Jamaica in 2003.
He admits not getting the breakthrough wears on him.
“Sometimes I do get frustrated, but the important thing is to be positive,” he said.
