All eyes on Burrowes, Anderson in squash tourney
Decorated squash champions Wayne Burrowes and Karen Anderson lead the field of over 50 competitors vying for top honours at the BCW Capital/Liguanea Club Tournament which serves off tomorrow today at the Liguanea Club in St Andrew.
The tournament will utilise a handicap format which levels the playing field across experience and skill levels. With this exciting seeding system every match is expected to be competitive as each contender has a genuine shot at the title.
Another exciting feature of the tournament is the gender neutral seeding, which means male and female players will go up against each other rather than competing in separate draws.
All eyes will be on Burrowes, who holds the mens’ record for the most All Jamaica Senior Championship wins with 13 national titles under his belt. Interestingly, Burrowes’ stiffest competition is expected to come from veteran ladies champion, Karen Anderson who has won a record 12 All Jamaica Women’s titles. Anderson, who has been out of action for an extended period due to injury, is expected to give the male players a run for their money and could seriously challenge Burrowes for the crown.
And, while the spotlight might be on Anderson and Burrowes, senior national team players Bruce Levy and Joey Levy have the potential to upset the applecart. Bruce Levy in particular should be in good match shape, having competed in the Senior Caribbean Area Squash Championships (CASA) just last month.
More than 50 players will contest the knock out tournament which will be played over six rounds running fromtoday to Sunday.
