Jamaica’s U12 tennis teams headed to Mexico
JAMAICA’S boys’ and girls’ teams in the ITF/GSDF Under-12 Team Championships have qualified for the Master’s Event being held in Monterrey, Mexico, October 20-26.
The teams, comprised of John Azar, Damani Cain, Jenna Harrison and Michaela Stephens and coach Thomas Plummer, earned Jamaica a spot in the Masters Event by placing second in the qualifying event for the English Caribbean, held in Kingston, Jamaica from September 1-8.
The Team Championships took place at the Liguanea Club, and saw teams of players between 10 and 12 years old, from The Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Guyana, St Lucia and Suriname competing for the prized spot in the Masters Event.
The Jamaican teams were dominant forces throughout the competition, winning their round-robin groups to advance to the semi-finals, where they faced their toughest opponents, the seasoned Bahamian teams.
The three teams moving forward from the regional qualifying event are The Bahamas, Jamaica and Bermuda, having placed first, second and third, respectively, in both the boys’ and girls’ events. Jamaica’s second team of Karan Chatani, Giovanni Isaacs, Emma Dibbs, Mia Minott and coach Sashalee Moyston played well throughout the event, but were unable to advance to the Masters Event.
