Monday Night football takes centre stage in week one
NOT that there weren’t any good games on Sunday, but none of them came close to the action on Monday night as Mike Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles spoiled the home opener for Robert Griffin III (RGIII) and the Washington Redskins. Then, as if that were not enough, in the late game from the West Coast, the San Diego Chargers blew a 21-point third-quarter lead to the dangerous and ambitious Houston Texans. I say ambitious because these Texans have their eyes set on post season heroics.
FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, was abuzz with excitement as the Redskins took the field with their star quarterback RGIII supposedly healthy and ready to roll after an off-season knee surgery. In a word, he looked rusty, the result of no pre-season game time. On the other side of the ball, the Philadelphia Eagles, under new head coach Chip Kelly and his veteran quarterback Michael Vick, put on an offensive show with what must be the performance of the week. From the get-go, the pace of the Eagles offence was frenetic to say the least. They ran a total of 77 plays for 443 total yards, and left the Redskins bemused and breathless. By the third quarter the score was 33-7. To their credit the ‘Skins did mount a comeback of sorts and scored 20 unanswered points to gain some respectability. Defensive coordinators around the League must be wondering how they will neutralise the Eagles offence when they face them.
Meanwhile, over on the West Coast, the San Diego Chargers were in Monday Night meltdown mode. They led the Houston Texans by 21 points midway the third quarter, and somehow managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, losing 31-28 in their home opener. You may recall they had a similar meltdown on Monday Night last year, when they blew a 24-0 lead over the Denver Broncos. In all fairness to the Chargers, it’s not that they are that bad — it’s more that the Texans are a talented and relentless team destined for the play-offs this year. They are capable of a lot of things, and coming back from seemingly insurmountable odds is one of them.
Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys got the better of Eli Manning and the New York Giants 36-31 in their primetime match-up on Sunday. This, despite Manning throwing for 450 yards and four touchdowns, and Giants receiver Victor Cruz reeling in 3 touchdown passes. Could this be the year for the boys from ‘Big D’? We’ll have to wait and see.
By the way, did anyone see the Pittsburgh Steelers only managing to scrape together nine points against the Tennessee Titans??? Ben Roesthlisberger and company looked abysmal to say the least. It’s shaping up to be a long season for the boys from the Steel City.
Among the other teams to get off to winning starts in Week One were the Indianapolis Colts, St Louis Rams, Detroit Lions, Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, and surprisingly, the New York Jets, who many predicted would struggle this season. They still may do so, but at least they got that first win early.
So, how did we do in Week One as far as predictions against the JustBet point spreads were concerned? Week One games are always difficult to call. Yours truly was somewhat pathetic with a 6-10 record. Thank goodness it’s early days and there are opportunities for improvement as the season unfolds. Both Peter Lindo and Andre Hutchinson were 7-9 leaving JustBet’s Andrei Roper to be the only guy with a positive record, going 9-7. Congrats to Roper, the lead dog for Week One.
Let’s turn our attention to the Week Two games. The Jets played the Patriots Wednesday night, and by now you should know the result of that match-up. The Redskins-Packers game should be most interesting as RGIII goes up against Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. Both suffered losses in Week One and both are determined not to go 0-2. All eyes will also be on the Broncos-Giants game, arguably the game of the week and the template for sibling rivalry, as Peyton Manning goes up against younger brother Eli Manning in the much-vaunted “Manning Bowl”. Whenever these two clash the question arises, who do the parents root for? It’s an interesting dilemma. Then later that evening, the 49ers and the Seahawks meet to determine who runs things on the West Coast. It is also a contest between two of the top young quarterbacks in the League — San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick and Seattle’s Russell Wilson. I sincerely hope the latter prevails.
So we’re off and running, and looking forward to the Week Two action. Enjoy the games everyone, and make sure you go out and place your bets with Jamaica’s number one sports betting game — JustBet !
