Princess Popstar in facile romp
An otherwise ordinary day of midweek racing at Caymanas Park yesterday was lit up by what many pundits in attendance described as a truly devastating first appearance by Princess Popstar.
The Adore The Gold — Doc’s Paladin two-year-old bay filly, racing over 1,000 metres round with Percy Williams in the saddle set off in front and simply went further and further away for a sensational 19-length victory over Dr Dearest and Big Bad Links.
While the margin of victory was most impressive, the final time of 59.1 seconds for the distance covered was the real eye-catcher. It was a really fast time for juveniles at this stage of their racing careers with splits of 23.3 x 46.3. Interesting to note that the good time recorded by Princess Popstar was done despite a heavy breeze coming down the two-furlong straight. Princess Popstar is owned by 2 Penyu and is trained by many times champion trainer Philip Feanny, and is a half sister to last year’s Derby winner Typewriter.
This is the first crop for Adore The Gold to race with Princess Popstar representing only the second overall starter for the stallion.
The top-rated event on the 10-race programme, an Overnight Allowance over 1,100 metres was taken in fine style by the Feanny/Williams combination only for Kipling Weekend to be disqualified and placed fifth. The race was awarded to Awesome Camille trained by Gary Subratie and ridden by Aaron Chatrie, with second going to Edison, and third to Run Johnny Run.
Jockey Omar Walker, the current leader in the race for championship honours continued his steady march to the title with two winners on the day — She’s My Honey for trainer Raymond Townsend, and Zacapa for Subratie.
