TSO COUNTDOWNS… House of bags
Juliet Moss-Solomon, the owner of House of Bags, is gearing up for Thursday, September 19, when the Jamaica Observer Takes Style Out. What better way to kick-start the week than with Bag Talk. AW TSO reporter Curt Cawley clutches a few…
What’s the genesis of your store’s name?
A satisfied client (many years ago) gave me a gift in a bag shaped like a house. This coupled with the observation made by someone that “This feels like a house of bags”, became the inspiration not only for the store’s name but for its interior: a store against the backdrop of a classic structured house design painted by a self-taught artist. A cosy setting with a kick of sophistication where our customers would feel relaxed and comfortable to browse and shop with family
and friends.
How long have you been in the retail industry?
Our journey started in 2010 but in 2011 House of Bags Barbican Centre opened its doors thus creating a bag haven under one roof.
What keeps you interested in the business of fashion?
Definitely the encouragement from our customers. There’s no better feeling than seeing a customer rocking one of our bags. That brings a smile to my face. A satisfied customer is the best form of advertisment and ours keep coming back again and again.
Plus, the ability to provide that all-important accessory item in a hassle-free, private, tranquil environment — priceless.
How would you describe your personal style?
Simple yet elegant or bold and vibrant.
What lines do you carry?
A wide selection of brands from Dooney and Bourke, Michael Kors, Nine West, Coach, Jessica Simpson, Tignanello, Murvel, Bueno to Mar and Jac. Each piece is carefully selected for our discerning customer.
Which are the fastest-moving lines?
We have introduced over the last year, shoes and clothing from London and our customers have responded favourably. Our signature line is Dooney & Bourke bags and accessories which are durable and trendy yet timeless, colourful and classy.
Michael Kors and Coach are the preferred brands for many of our male customers in search that perfect gift for that special
woman in their life.
How would you describe the House of Bags customer?
An individual in search of a great bag — someone who’s meticulous, style savvy and who pays attention to detail.

What do you expect to be the major trend or must-have for Jamaica Observer Takes Style Out?
Because we stock great shoes and handbags: the jewelled heel, pastel colour-block bags, the Cambridge satchel, vintage shades and embellished sandals. Why? It’s all about the detail when it comes to great style.
