Glenmuir, CC open with 2-0 wins
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Defending champions Glenmuir High and former champions Cornwall College opened their 2013 ISSA/Lime daCosta Cup football season with 2-0 wins over Denbigh High and Maldon High, respectively, at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Saturday.
Despite dominating their games, both teams were made to work hard by opponents who made up for talent with hard work and rugged defending.
Akeem McCarthy recorded the season’s first double in the second half for Cornwall College, who missed a handful of chances in the third game of the day, after Glenmuir scored twice in the first half in the Zone M game.
In the first game of the day that was played in a steady drizzle, Manning Cup teams St George’s College and Camperdown High played out a 2-2 draw.
Peter-Lee Vassell missed a handful of scoring chances for Cornwall that saw goalkeeper Leonardo Friginette make one good save the entire day, as Maldon failed to put up a consistent attack.
McCarthy scored in the 52nd and in time added at the end of the second half, both almost from the same set play, balls coming in from the left side that the Maldon defence failed to deal with properly.
Glenmuir scored their first win in the post Jackie Walters era when Ricardo Dennis scored in the fifth minute, and Romaine Fagan in the 34th minute in what looked like a runaway win.
Denbigh High, however, came back strongly in the second half and created their own scoring chances, but fell short.
Five games will be played tomorrow when the competition continues, but in Manning Cup action today, Hydel face Edith Dalton, Jonathan Grant welcome Calabar, and Ascot take on St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) in Group A; Excelsion oppose Waterford, Cumberland visit Haile Selassie, and Norman Manley host St Jago in Group B; St Andrew College welcome Bridgeport, Jose Marti play at home to Ardenne, and Jamaica College visit Tivoli Gardens in Group E; while in Group G, Innswood entertain Meadowbrook, Trench Town travel to St Mary’s College, and Campion College welcome Holy Trinity.
