Cornwall College, Reggae Youths retain St James football titles
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Cornwall College and Reggae Youths retained their St James Football Association/Sandals Under-17 and Under-20 titles respectively, after contrasting wins over Club Stars and Spot Valley High in the finals played at Jarrett Park on Thursday.
Reggae Youths dominated Spot Valley High 2-0 in a hard-fought game, while Cornwall College, who finished the game with nine players, came from a goal down in the second half to beat Club Stars 2-1.
Three red cards were issued in the Under-17 final, as two Cornwall players — Leonardo Murray and Peter-Lee Vassell, and Antoyan Brown of Club Stars were sent off after a fight late in the game.
Cornwall College had beaten Club Stars twice in the regular season, conceding one goal in the process, and came into the game as favourites, but despite dominating possession and keeping Club Stars in their own defensive area for long periods, failed to get past the goalkeeper.
After soaking up the Cornwall attack for long periods, Club Stars took the lead three minutes into the second half when Tevin Downes beat the offside trap and rocketed the ball into the goal from 20 yards out past goalkeeper Leonardo Friginette.
Kymanie Russell, who was later named the competition’s top scorer and MVP, levelled things for Cornwall in the 56th minute from close range, minutes before the fracas broke out.
Even with a one-man advantage, Club Stars were still defensive and Cornwall took the initiative as national Under-15 representative Jordan Fletcher scored the winner with two minutes to go in regulation time, when his shot from just inside the 18-yard box curled into the far left corner.
Reggae Youths avenged their earlier 1-0 loss to Spot Valley with goals from Tavion Bailey in the opening minute of the game, and Leslie Foster late in the game after a mistake by the goalkeeper Alwyn Newsome.
The game was barely under way before Bailey gave Club Stars the lead inside 29 seconds, and the schoolboys had to play catch up for the rest of the game.
Spot Valley, who are being coached by veteran Steve Bucknor and who are getting ready for the start of the daCosta Cup, ended the game with 10 players, as the top player, national Under-17 representative Tyshon Hill, was sent off late in the game, his second red card in the competition in three games.
Spot Valley were awarded a penalty early in the game and had the chance to draw level, but team captain Oshane Forbes missed twice, having his spot kick saved by the goalkeeper, then putting the rebound high over the crossbar.
Reggae Youths only managed to put the game away in the 81st minute when the Spot Valley goalkeeper Newsome waved at a cross from Foster and only managed to deflect the ball into his own net.
Forbes, despite his penalty miss, took the award for the top scorer, while Bailey was named MVP.
