WHAT THEY SAY – MARGARET PARCHMENT
When did you start your career as a racehorse trainer?
Long years ago, in 1977, with Mrs Eileen Cliggott.
Which horse was your first winner?
Palmetto. It was somewhere around 1993. Let me add, however, that I did not train for a while as I worked with the Jamaica Racing Commission where I conducted the Jockey School. It was around 1989 that I started training for myself.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
I think it was Vincero at odds of 99-1.
Which is the best horse that you have trained?
Palmetto was the best horse that I have trained so far. He was a very fast horse by Whistling Palm. All the Whistling Palm horses were known to be unsound, but I liked them and I knew them quite well. He was not a horse that you could train hard, so his basic training was built around swimming, hacking and trotting, but he was extremely fast and for that I thought that he could run 1:09 or 1:10 for 1200 metres, but we could never push him hard. Nevertheless, the races he did win he won them very well.
Which is the best horse you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
The Viceroy. Yes, I have seen many good horses, but I choose The Viceroy because he was a very versatile horse. He was a very well bred horse by The Peacemaker, and he was truly a talented horse that was locally bred.
Who has influenced your career most?
Mrs Eileen (Cliggott). I knew her for a long time as we were both horsewomen, so the association was not difficult. I have been with horses all my life and not only racehorses but in other capacities. I did show jumping before I came to Jamaica. I was about three years-old when I remember sitting on a horse and as a result, I grew to love animals all my life, horses in particular. I like to watch them and like to paint them whenever I have the time. I just find them very beautiful animals. I just hate to see the cruelty to which they are sometimes subjected. This is something I would like to see stopped. I hate to see horses being abandoned. One of my pet peeves is that racehorses get mistreated at times. And that is why you would hardly see any of my horses in claiming, because I do not like to see what happens to them.
