What They Say — SPENCER CHUNG
When did you start your career as a racehorse trainer?
I started in September 2007 with one horse White Diamond.
Which horse was your first winner?
White Diamond was my first winner and I won first time out.
Which horse is your longest odds winner?
That was Reds Thomas at odds of 28-1 in a maiden race.
Which is the best horse that you have ever trained?
That is quite easy. Saint Cecelia is the best horse that I have ever trained.
I never raced as a two-year-old because she showed signs as being very soft, so I thought it wise to give her time to develop and I never raced her until she was three and the rest is history. She is now six and I believe because she never raced at two that could be among the reasons why she has lasted so long and is in pretty good shape at present and it is a pleasure to train her. Saint Cecelia is a darling when at the track but very high strung when in her stall. She however gives you more than you expect when prepared for racing.
Which is the best horse you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
It is hard to identify the best horse in a nutshell. Horses for me are in categories, for example, you have best two-year-olds, best three-year-olds and older horses. Then they are categories as best stayer and best sprinter. I will say the best stayer I’ve seen is Miracle Man and the best sprinter is Saint Cecelia. I’ve heard of Eros and how good a horse he was but I never saw him run. The same is true for me with Legal Light. There is a lot of euphoria in racing circles attached to the name of Legal Light.
The best two-year-old I have seen is Stormontheloose and three-year-old A King Is Born. When I was with Philip (Feanny) as his assistant A King Is Born was definitely the best of his generation an “A” Class horse from the get go. He won everything but lost the Triple Crown to his stablemate. It must have been a sad day for him but this is the nature of the sport. He was however more of a sprinter than stayer although he did win the Derby and other long distance races. For me it is hard to generalise and say which is the best horse as there are colts and fillies. It is not all the time you will have a Saint Cecelia who could beat the colts, which means that you have to separate them into the best colt and the best filly categories and then narrow it down to a common denominator based on achievement to arrive at which horse in fact is the best overall.
Who has influenced your career the most?
I would say definitely Phillip Feanny. My father Stephen and my uncle Valentine were owners of horses and this assisted me to love horses and to develop the desire to train horses. They also strongly supported my desire to train horses. Nonetheless, the greatest influence on my career was and is Phillip Feanny. I came under his tutelage, with him becoming my apprentice master but it was much more than that when you work with Phillip. He was much more than an apprentice master.
