VIJAY ASHLEY — A WINNER, FINALLY!
The name of jockey Vijay Ashley is not one which is well known among racegoers. Since the start of 2013, Ashley has ridden only once, finishing out of the frame. Then out of the blue on Sunday, Ashley did the unthinkable when he piloted rank outsider Liar Liar to an unexpected victory in the five and a half furlong two-year-old event. Ashley brought the Film Director – Hello Baby chestnut filly with a storming run in the final furlong from way off the pace to catch and beat 4/5 favourite Cigaretteintherain (Paul Francis) by a short head, with Franfield (Dane Nelson) in third position. Truth be told, Ashley looked good in the saddle, and the Complete Racing Guide sincerely hopes that the win on Liar Liar will help to propel his career in the saddle.
WHAT A RIDE BY SHAMAREE MUIR!
Sunday’s first race was a humdinger. Top-notch rider Winston Griffiths on Alyssa’s Call and leading apprentice Shamaree Muir on Audre’s Blessing were locked in a stirring battle in the final furlong of the 1820 metres event. It was a classic case of the young and inexperienced (Muir) against the old and experienced (Griffiths). Close video analysis of the finish gave clear indications that Muir has patterned his riding style on that of Griffiths. Both riders were fanning away with rapidity, with the younger man finally prevailing by a short head. It was really something to watch the two riders at work. If indeed Muir has patterned Griffiths’ style, he has made a wise choice. The true test of Muir’s riding ability will be tested when he loses his apprentice claiming. For now we congratulate him on his development.
