Local ‘ballers try to impress Schafer today
JERMAINE ‘Tuffy’ Anderson heads a 25-member local squad that has been selected by the Jamaica Football Federation’s (JFF) technical staff for a one-off squad match set for 4:00 pm today at the JFF Training Centre, at the University of the West Indies, Mona.
The training session will provide the players with a chance to impress the coaching staff, headed by new head coach Winfred Schafer, ahead of Jamaica’s World Cup qualifier away to Panama on September 6.
The overseas contingent is expected to start arriving on September 2.
Schafer’s assistant, Vin Blaine, told the Jamaica Observer that this squad is to expose some players to head coach.
“He requested that he wanted to look at the local players and it was supposed to be done before, but because he had to go to England and look at players it was delayed,” noted Blaine.
“I still believe it was important for him to have a look and see what he has here. He viewed some games in the Champions Cup and he would not necessarily have seen some of these players,” Blaine explained.
“It’s a one-off game, not a training camp, and he will be making his observations from there,” he added.
Anderson, 34, has been one of the most prolific local strikers of recent times and his non-selection for Jamaica’s World Cup campaign has been one of the most topical issues.
The Waterhouse hit man has been given another chance to prove himself along with several fringe national players in Jacomeno Barrett (Montego Bay United), Richard McCullum (Waterhouse), Adrian Reid, Ewan Grandison (Portmore United), Dicoy Williams, Montrose Phinn (Harbour View), Dino Williams (Montego Bay United), Wolry Wolfe (Humble Lion), Kaemmar Daley (Tivoli Gardens), and Waterhouse’s new signees Lamar Nelson and Marvin Morgan.
The other members are: Andre Clennon (Arnett Gardens), Daemion Benjamin, Renae Lloyd (Boys’ Town), Gariece McPherson (Cavalier), John Ross Edwards, Lemar Lawrence (Harbour View), Allan Ottey (Montego Bay United), Rosario Harriott, Levaughn Williams (Portmore United), Linval Lewis, Francois Swaby (Sporting Central Academy), Jameel Thompson (Tivoli Gardens), and Hughan Gray (Waterhouse).
National players Evan Taylor, Joel Senior and Xavean Virgo are absent from this selection for varying reasons from injuries to overseas commitments.
