KC, STGC ready for Roper Cup battle
THE battle for the 2013 Roper Cup will get under way this Saturday when perennial contenders Kingston College (KC) host defending Triple Crown champions St George’s College (STGC) at Cloverly Park, North Street.
Action in the one-day football extravaganza gets going from 10:00 am with the Under-16 colts teams kicking off proceedings. The focus will then shift to the Under-35 encounter followed by the Over-35 match which is expected to feature former Reggae Boy Fabian Davis and Yaro Magnus of KC, as well as Christopher DaCosta and Mario Watts of STGC.
The Under-14 boys will then get a chance to showcase their skills before the big Manning Cup showdown.
Kingston College will be hosting the 49th edition of the Roper Cup and head coach Donavan Hayles is anticipating a stellar year for the boys in purple.
“We have been preparing very well, and all I can say is don’t be surprised if we go all the way this year,” Hayles said.
Also looking for a good showing from his boys is Kingston College Principal Dave Myrie, who made it clear that KC will be looking to upset the apple cart.
“We at KC need to even things up. STGC have been dominating for a while now, and I believe this year is our year,” Myrie said.
President of the St George’s College Old Boys’ Association Wayne Wray says his school has retained most of the players from last season with a couple of additions.
“We have about three new players that have joined us, and we are looking forward to a high level of football from them and the rest of the team come Saturday,” Wray said.
Regional cable giants Sportsmax will once again sponsor the Roper Cup and they will be providing an MVP Trophy for the Over-35 and Manning Cup winners.
The 2013 honoree for the Roper Cup will be St George’s College old boy Lennox Robinson. Admission to the event is $200.
