Clive Lynch – the supreme journeyman jock
CLIVE Lynch has been part of the jockeys’ colony for a long time. Sometimes he is off the boil, leading to speculation that he is well past his best, yet he keeps on defying the odds, proving that riders like himself and to a lesser extent Richard Mitchell are essential links in the chain of racing.
Lynch’s performance on Classic Beau was a gentle reminder of his ability as after surrendering the lead to Mitchell on Sunlight Express, he was able to rally his mount for a final effort which proved decisive, as he got back in the nick of time to win by a neck, with Sunlight Express second and Eastwood third. It was a very good ride by the rejuvenated Lynch which was well received by the public.
Classic Beau, at seven, continues to demonstrate his consistency and ability to perform well at the highest claiming level. The dark brown horse was winning for the 13th time from 85 lifetime starts.
Rare day for Omar Walker
Omar Walker has been champion jockey four times. He is now on course for his fifth title, easily leading rivals including Dane Nelson and Dick Cardenas in this year’s championship race. On Saturday last at the Park, Walker had a rare day, as he rode no winners. It is not very often that a race day passes without Walker making an entrance in the winners’ circle. Such is always the uncertain nature of racing.
