SUNDAY racing returned to Caymanas Park yesterday with a nine-race card that realised a handle of $24.6 million.

Separate and apart from enjoying an afternoon of competitive thoroughbred racing, the fair-sized crowd in attendance had the opportunity to purchase back-to-school books, bags and other items at greatly reduced prices sponsored by Azan’s Super Centre and Book Empire, manufacturers of Seek Exercise Books.

The infield was also abuzz with activities for over 300 children from Father Richard Holung’s Missionaries of the Poor and from inner-city communities sponsored by LP Azar.

On the track, the two-year-old chestnut filly Liar Liar ridden by jockey Vijay Ashley created a 16-1 upset in winning the programme’s $715,000 Rhoel Rhoden Memorial Trophy feature by a head.

Owned and trained by Rudolph Hardial, Liar Liar came running on from below the distance to nab the long-time leader and 4-5 favourite Cigaretteintherain, ridden by Paul Francis in the glass to open her winning account in the maiden condition race for native-bred two-year-olds.

The filly stopped the clock at 1:07.3 for 1,100 metres. Franfield, ridden by champion jockey Dane Nelson and running in an official race for the first time, finished another 4 1/2 length back third as the 8-5 second favourite. All That Matter, also running for the first time, completed the frame under Richard Mitchell at odds of 43-1 in the field of eight after Frangipani, a stablemate of Franfield, was a late non-starter.

Liar Liar by Film Director out of Hello Baby (Schism) and bred by Lorenzo Robinson, was winning for the first time from three career starts and earned $390,400 as the winner’s share for earnings of $454,950.

No trainer saddled more than one winner, but Omar Walker and the champion claiming apprentice Shamaree Muir shared the riding spotlight with two wins. Walker booted home El Cliente in the second race for trainer Gordon Lewis and Jagsover for trainer Lawrence Freemantle in the fourth, while Muir had the leg-up on Audre’s Blessing in the first race for trainer Wilfred Chin and Pete’swildone in the seventh for trainer Ian Parsard.
