What They Say! – BERNARD VINCENT Racehorse trainer
When did you start your career as a racehorse trainer?
My career started as an assistant trainer to the late Aubrey Pinnock in 1980.
Which horse was your first winner?
Stitch Again back in 1984 for owner A G McKenzie.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
There were many of them but I can recall Dust Rock at odds of 17-1.
Which is the best horse you have trained?
That will be Red Dynasty. He was a wonderful racing specimen with a lot of heart. Sometimes when he is not up to his best, you’ll be surprised at the races he won. He was quite a good horse, stout hearted and very gallant. He was a real fighter.
Which is the best horse you’ve seen run at the Park?
That is a bit difficult having seen a number of outstanding runners over varying distances. My favourite horse is Legal Light. There were also None Such, Eros and most recently Miracle Man and some others who were quite outstanding on their day. There is another horse Warfare who is not considered in the league of those already mentioned, but he was a great galloper and stayer and still holds the track record for 2,000 metres distance.
Who influenced your career the most?
I came into racing because I knew Aubrey a bit. I have always been around racing from a kid, back in 1957 at Knutsford Park where I use to go around with a trainer by the name of Perkins. That sort of association got me in love with horses from I was a young man and then I met Pinnock in the 1970s and meeting him helped to galvanise the interest. I must say that I came back to racing through a friend by the name of Wong. And after that another friend of mine by the name of Winston Martin and myself purchased a horse by the name of The Arabian who was quite a very good horse. From then I started to establish myself as an owner and became fond of the training profession and came right in.
