Bigman In Town makes smashing debut at Santa Rosa
Top three-year-old Bigman In Town made a smashing debut at the Santa Rosa Park last Saturday in Trinidad and Tobago.
The former top local Classic aspirant won by an astounding 21 lengths over another Jamaican-bred Urban Knight (second) and Rhea’s Toy Soldier (third), making it a trifecta placing for horses born in Jamaica. Bigman In Town was ridden in the 1750-metre event by Ricardo Jadoo and was trained by locally based conditioner Gary Subratie, who was saddling his second winner in the twin-island republic following Perfect Day’s win the previous week. Jadoo is currently in eighth place in the Trinidad championship with 11 winners from 119 rides. Up to Saturday, a total of 243 races were run in Trinidad. The winning time for the 1750 metres travelled by Bigman In Town was 1:51.0. Four horses competed in the event with another four listed as late scratches.
The win by Bigman In Town was in preparation for the Trinidad Derby which is expected to be run in the early part of next month.Subratie was ecstatic over the victory, saying that while the opposition was not the best available, Bigman In Town needed the outing, particularly after his trip from Jamaica to Trinidad.
“I am very pleased. The ‘Bigman’ was in his element. He has adapted very well to his new race track and it was imperative that he got the run-out under race conditions. He came through with flying colours and simply did what he had to do,” the trainer said.
Subratie said the task was now to keep the colt happy and to continue his training in preparation for the major objective which is the Derby.
“Having gone through last Saturday’s race well, I will now turn in earnest to the task of ensuring his preparation for the Derby,” said the man who is currently in second position in the local trainers’ championship.
Perfect Day, who has already scored a win in Trinidad, is scheduled to run on Saturday August 31 in the Trinidad Oaks over nine furlongs.
