Five Caribbean countries chase netball glory starting today
GLASGOW, Scotland (CMC) — Five countries are representing the region in the 7th World Youth Netball Championships due to open in Glasgow, Scotland today.
Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Bermuda and Cayman Islands are among 20 countries from around the world taking part in the 10-day tournament which runs until August 31.
Trinidad and Tobago and Bermuda are in Group B alongside New Zealand, Northern Ireland and Malta for the preliminary round of the tournament.
Jamaica and Cayman Islands are in Group C with Wales, Samoa and Scotland, while Barbados are in Group D with England, Papua New Guinea, Republic of Ireland and Singapore.
Group A comprises Australia, South Africa, Fiji, Israel and Namibia.
The Championships will comprise 70 games, with every team guaranteed to play seven matches before being awarded a placing from first to 20th at the preliminary stage.
The event is held every four years.
Australia won the last tournament in the Cook Islands in 2009, New Zealand took second and Jamaica third.
Cayman Islands play Scotland in the opening match today at the Emirates Arena.
