Barbican claim mid-season crown
Barbican underlined their dominance of women’s football with a comprehensive 3-0 whipping of GC Foster to capture the Sherwin Williams Mid Season final at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.
A double strike by Nickhimia James in the 26th and 41st minutes and a strike by captain Philisha Lewis in the 23rd minute, saw Barbican defend the first of the three titles they swept last season.
The Charles Edwards-coached outfit walked away with $80,000 winning prize, while GC Foster got $60,000 for their humiliation.
Barbican won the Women’s Premier League for the fifth consecutive time last season, to add to the ColourScape Knockout and the mid-season final and coach Edwards is eyeing a repeat.
“This was the least concerning trophy and we have taken it, so obviously we are going for the three now and I don’t think it’s gonna be easy, but we are definitely going for it,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
“Today’s game is one of those games where we came and decided to fight hard because we are short of a couple key players, but the beautiful thing is that the other girls stepped in, did their work and we came out victorious,” Edwards noted.
Meanwhile, a sombre looking Kurt Brooks, head coach of GC Foster, said his team paid the price for poor defending.
“When you make mistakes against a team like Barbican, it’s going to cost you and we made three simple mistakes and Barbican capitalised on them and that’s the result of the game,” he pointed out.
But he was philosophical in defeat and still has high hopes for the rest of the season. “One thing about these girls is that they are strong and they can bounce back from anything. We have done it already and we can do it again.”
In front of a decent-sized crowd on a cool evening, both teams started out briskly with the underdogs GC Foster matching the defending champion stride for stride.
In the 23rd minute, captain Lewis saw her downward header from a corner kick deflected past the despairing dive of goalkeeper Olivia Reid to open the scoring.
Three minutes later, last season’s MVP Jodi-Ann McGreggor watched her free kick parried onto the crossbar but goal poacher James was quickest to the rebound and tapped home in the 26th minute to double Barbican’s advantage.
The powerful James was on hand again, this time smartly changing direction to get in front of her marker and collected a McGreggor long pass and calmly slotted home her second for the match and her eighth goal for the season to seal the win.
